Door of no return
A stark and poignant symbol of the transatlantic slave trade. As part of one of the oldest European structures in sub-Saharan Africa, this doorway marks the passage through which countless enslaved Africans were forced onto ships, never to see their homeland again.
The castle, built by the Portuguese in the 15th century and later controlled by the Dutch and British, served as a key holding and departure point for slaves destined for the Americas. Today, the Door of No Return stands as a powerful reminder of the brutal history of slavery and a place of reflection and remembrance for visitors worldwide.
